My first experience with a staffing company was when I needed a job in a hurry. I had been laid off due to a company closure and, as a divorced mom with two little kids, I needed income and a feeling of security. Being the unshakable optimist that I am, I knew that something would come up if I looked hard enough.
When a friend suggested I contact Kelly Services to see if I could get a temp job, I decided to check it out. I filled out the application, took some skills tests and got called two days later, which turned out to be a three-month assignment working in the office of a local health care facility. Little did I know then that working as a temporary employee would lead to a career.
As one thing led to another, that experience would be the catalyst for my future in this business that has spanned more than 20 years - working with franchisees for two national staffing companies, providing them with sales training and coaching for 26 offices.
After leaving that company, I went on to manage two independently owned offices to help them increase their business.
All of that required a lot of traveling, so when an opportunity arose for me to buy my own staffing franchise in the city where I lived, I decided to jump in. Even though I knew it would be challenging, I simply couldn't pass it up. Yes, it was filled with bumps and bruises, but it was also the best learning experience of my career.
I didn't do it alone. I had a brilliant team and, together, we took the office from $0 in revenue to $1.8 million in our first year and helped a lot of good people find work.
I will always have a warm affection for people who are willing to work on temporary assignments. You just never know what great things might come from it.
