HOW I WENT FROM BEING A SCARED, DIVORCED MOM TO HAVING A REWARDING CAREER ...
My first experience with a staffing company was when I needed a job in a hurry. I had been laid off due to a company closure and, as a divorced mom with two little kids, I needed income and a feeling of security. Being the unshakable optimist that I am, I knew that something would come up if I looked hard enough, yet I was still scared.
When a friend suggested I contact Kelly Services to see if I could get a temp job, I decided to check it out. I filled out the application, took some skills tests and got called two days later, which turned out to be a three-month assignment working in the office of a local health care facility. Little did I know then that working as a temporary employee would change my life and lead to a career.
As one thing led to another, that first experience would be the catalyst for my future in this business that has spanned more than 20 years - everything from managing a Kelly Services branch to working with franchisees for two national staffing companies, providing sales training and coaching for 26 offices.
Later, I went on to manage two independently owned offices to help them increase their business.
My daughter was in high school by this time and all of that traveling was taking its toll on both of us, so when an opportunity arose for me to buy my own franchise in the city where we lived, I decided to jump in. Even though I knew it would be challenging, something told me not to pass it up.
It was quite a ride, filled with bumps, bruises and falling on my face a few times, but it was, without exception, the best learning experience of my career.
However, I didn't do it alone. I had a brilliant team and together, we took the office from $0 in revenue to $1.8 million in our first year and helped a lot of good people find work.
I will always be grateful for that temporary assignment, because it led me to where I am today - writing for an industry I love.
