My first experience with a staffing company was when I needed a job in a hurry. I had been laid off because of a company closure and, as a divorced Mom with two little kids, I needed income and a feeling of security. Being the unshakable optimist that I am, I knew that something would come up if I looked hard enough.
When a friend suggested I contact Kelly Services to see if I could get a temp job, I went ahead and checked into it. I filled out the application, took some skills tests and got called two days later, which turned out to be a three-month assignment working in the office of a local health care facility. Little did I know then that working a temp assignment would lead to a career.
One thing led to another, but that experience was the catalyst for my future in this business that has spanned more than 20 years ... working with franchisees for two national staffing firms, sales training and coaching as well as managing a couple of independently owned offices to help them increase their business.
All of that required a lot of traveling, so when an opportunity arose for me to buy my own staffing franchise in the city where I lived, I just couldn't pass it up. I knew it would be challenging, filled with bumps and bruises and it sure was, but it was also the best experience of my career. Along with my brilliant staff, we took the office from $0 in revenue to $1.8 million in our first year and helped a lot of good people find work.
I will always have a warm affection for people who are willing to work on temporary assignments. You just never know what great things can come from it.
